FAQs
What do I look for in a foldable table for the garden?
Aesthetic – style can be a priority so if you’re looking for something a little on-trend for 2023, Modern Gardens Magazine contributor Jules Barton-Breck recommends either terracotta or copper furniture. Alternatively, Jules loves indoor-worthy patioware – which could be a table that looks so smart, that you could bring it indoors.
Sets – As well as a table, you may well be thinking about garden seating, too. Not to worry, we’ve made sure to include a variety of foldable dining sets for your garden – to suit any and all lifestyles. With a bit of luck, the foldable garden chairs may fit in your garden shed or have a hole for a parasol.
Space-saving – Spotting a great design that folds away into a compact way is going to be a big hit with many. After all, you’re ideally looking for something sturdy, durable and reliable. Not only that, but you may also want to make space for other garden furniture or trends, such as fire pit tables or an outdoor pizza oven.
What types of folding tables are there?
There are drop-leaf tables, where the table still stands upright – and both sides of the table drop, down. There are also tables that are hinged and fold at the point where the leg meets the table.
How do I clean my outdoor furniture?
According to Jill Morgan, contributor for Modern Gardens Magazine, “The easiest, most effective, and cheapest way to clean your furniture is by using soapy water using a mild detergent or washing up liquid, and then using a brush or sponge to scrub it down. Simply rinse with a garden hose… and leave it to dry in direct sunlight.”
Can I cover my outdoor furniture?
Yes – in fact, we recommend it. Jill says: “All garden furniture sets will benefit from being covered up overnight in winter and even spring and summer when humidity is high and rain is common in the UK.”
Luckily, we have a buyer's guide on garden furniture covers.
How do you treat a wooden foldable table?
Many of our picks are wooden. So, we’re including a guide to treating your foldable tables, so their lives are extended. According to Wickes, you can treat wood with one of five items:
Wood Oil - penetrates deep into the wood grain, nourishing and sealing the timber. This helps to prevent drying, warping and splitting, Oils are tough, durable and good for waterproofing. They are best applied in thin and even coats with a brush or cloth, allowing them to absorb and dry before re-applying. Perfect for decking and furniture.
Wood Stain or Dye - is a great way to assure protection from the weather - and adds a rich colour, too. It offers great coverage, and long-lasting durability and enhances the natural wood grain. Plus, it's resistant to cracking, blistering and peeling. Re-coat every two to three years. Non-slip finishes are perfect for decking.
Wood Preserver - provides waterproofing, as well as protection against rot and decay. Resistant to mould, algae growth and woodworms, the wood preserver is also packed with UV protection. This kind of treatment penetrates the timber from within and should be applied liberally with a brush. This makes a great choice for beds, fencing and sheds.
Wood Varnish - is ideal for woodwork, providing high-performance protection against UV light and water penetration. This makes a great top-up for previously-treated wood. It resists cracking, peeling and blistering. Some formulas will offer year-round protection and different finishes, too. Varnish requires a sanded surface for smooth application.
Wood Paint - is the fastest (and easiest) way to transform your timber. It offers protection against fading, peeling and weather-related wear. Plus, it provides a rich, pigmented colour - and is ideal for old furniture, fence panels, trellis and more. It's best applied with a brush, pump or paint sprayer. Wickes recommends applying two or three even coats.
