Jules Barton-Breck
Jules is a freelance journalist and she writes an eclectic mix of features every month for Modern Gardens magazine, of which she is a former editor. Her articles cover every aspect for getting the most enjoyment out of outdoor living, from staying ahead of the curve of the new garden trends and the best ways to style up the latest must-haves, to interviewing Royal Horticultural Society award-winning garden designers and the owners of amazing gardens, along with hardcore game-changing projects and beautiful on-trend planting ideas for stunning blooming displays.
She began her career in journalism on national magazine weeklies including Woman’s Weekly and Woman, then moved to Prima in charge of all practical subjects and introduced a brand new gardening feature with multiple Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show gold winner AndySturgeon being the first to take part.
Jules also worked on the launches of Prima Baby, Prima Home and edited Prima Christmas Traditions. She went on to be editor of Safeway Magazine, which won a best consumer magazine award during her tenureship. Jules then took on the editor’s role at Family Circle, followed by Essentials, which won magazine of the year twice. She also won a British Society of Magazine Editors award and was shortlisted for the Editors’ Editor of the Year.
Jules now lives in Devon where she kicked off her freelance writing career. Her 300-year-old cottage has two gardens. One is down a side walkway and is a lush grassy escape, the other leads out from the back door and is now a gravel garden with lots of large pots as the lawn mower wouldn’t fit through the door!
Apart from planting up her numerous tall black garden pots every season with colour-coordinated bulbs and flowers – this year they’re going to be riot of bright orange, pink and red – Jules’ other obsession is with auctions, salvage and flea markets and buying antique and vintage homewares, which she displays in her home and also sells online at mrsbbdoesvintagehome.etsy.com
